Our Lady of Ransom
Today on From the Housetops, Brother Matthew reflects on the Feast of Our Lady of Ransom, celebrated on September 24, and the Blessed Virgin Mary’s role in the deliverance of Christians held captive by the Saracens. Drawing from The Liturgical Year, he recounts the founding of the Order of Our Lady of Mercy for the Ransom of Captives by St. Peter Nolasco, Blessed Raymond of Peñafort, and King James of Aragon in 1218. The members of the order dedicated themselves to the difficult work of ransoming Christian captives, sometimes even offering themselves as ransom for others, and the Church later established this feast in thanksgiving for the graces received through this work of charity.
The reflection then turns to True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary by St. Louis de Montfort, focusing on the Magnificat as a prayer of thanksgiving and praise to God. St. Louis explains that those devoted to Mary should frequently pray the Magnificat and describes the interior practices of total consecration to her: doing all our actions by Mary, with Mary, in Mary, and for Mary, so that we may do them more perfectly by Jesus, with Jesus, in Jesus, and for Jesus.
