“Let him who has ears Hear.” Matthew 13:19
Powerful Protectors: Our Guardian Angels
Today on From the Housetops, Brother Matthew reflects on the Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels, drawing from The Liturgical Year by Abbot Guéranger. He explores the Church’s teaching on the mission of guardian angels, who are assigned to watch over each person throughout earthly life, protect against spiritual dangers, inspire holy thoughts, assist in the struggle against sin, and present prayers to God. The reflection also considers the different roles of the nine choirs of angels and their place in God’s providential care for humanity and the created world.
Drawing on the writings of Origen, St. Ambrose, and St. Bernard of Clairvaux, Brother Matthew highlights the presence and assistance of the angels in the lives of the faithful. He reflects on their protection during trials, their encouragement along the path to salvation, and their role in bringing the soul’s prayers and desires before God. The episode continues with St. Bernard’s exhortation to honor, love, and be grateful to our guardian angels, who accompany us on our long and sometimes difficult journey toward our heavenly home. Listen to this reflection on the mission of the holy angels and the care God provides through these heavenly guardians.
