“Let him who has ears Hear.” Matthew 13:19
Reverence for God's Holy Name
Today on From the Housetops, Brother Matthew reflects on the Second Commandment: “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.” He discusses how this commandment calls us to honor God not only in our thoughts and actions, but also in our words. He emphasizes the reverence due to God’s holy name, the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints, and sacred persons, places, and things, including Holy Scripture, the sacraments, the Holy Mass, and Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.
Brother Matthew then examines two particular ways of honoring God’s name: the taking of oaths and the making of vows. He outlines the conditions that make an oath lawful—truth, judgment, and justice—and the importance of taking oaths only for serious and proper reasons. He also discusses the nature of vows, the obligations they entail, and the circumstances in which their fulfillment may cease or a dispensation may be granted. Finally, he considers the religious vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, describing how they help those who enter religious life pursue virtue and serve God. Listen to this episode to deepen your understanding of the Second Commandment and the importance of honoring God’s holy name through our words, promises, and actions.
