“Let him who has ears Hear.” Matthew 13:19

St. Ignatius and the Birth of a Spiritual Army

Today on From the Housetops, Brother Matthew reflects on the life of St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, and the remarkable conversion that began after he was seriously wounded in battle at Pamplona in 1521. As he recovered at the family castle, Ignatius began reading the life of Christ and the lives of the saints, leading him to recognize the profound difference between the spirit of the world and the spirit of Christ.

After leaving behind his ambitions for military glory and dedicating himself completely to the service of God, Ignatius began to embrace a life of prayer and penance, including his consecration to Our Lord under the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary and his pilgrimage to the Benedictine Abbey of Montserrat. There, he began his new life of spiritual warfare through prayer, self-denial, service to the sick, and poverty. Listen to this inspiring account of St. Ignatius Loyola’s conversion and discover the lessons his life offers for anyone seeking to leave behind worldly ambitions and grow closer to Christ.
