“Let him who has ears Hear.” Matthew 13:19
The Gentle Conqueror of Souls: St. Francis de Sales
In this chapter of From the Housetops, Brother Matthew reflects on the gentle and angelic Bishop of Geneva, Saint Francis de Sales, who holds a place of honor for the sweetness of his virtues, the simplicity of his heart, and the tenderness of his charity. God raised him up at a time when heresy claimed that the Church had lost her influence, sending him into the very regions where Calvinism was strongest. Through the ardor of his charity, his persuasive preaching, and his holy example, he converted, it is said, seventy-two thousand heretics and led countless souls to piety. He was a living image of Christ, calling sinners to repentance, the erring to truth, the just to perfection, and all to confidence and love.
Born of pious and devout parents, Francis showed early signs of sanctity and was educated in Paris and Padua, where he earned doctorates in civil and canon law. Ordained a priest and later made Bishop of Geneva, he labored heroically amid persecution, founded the Order of the Visitation, and wrote works filled with heavenly wisdom that guide souls to Christian perfection. He died holy in 1622, was honored by miracles after his death, canonized by the Church, and proclaimed a Doctor for his meekness, charity, and tireless zeal for the salvation of souls. Join us as we reflect on how the power of one man guided by God can change the world and lead souls to salvation, and how each of us is called to listen and be ready to respond.
