The Hail Mary: A Powerful Prayer

In this episode of From the Housetops, Brother Matthew reminds us of the blessings of the Hail Mary and the devotion of the Holy Rosary. St. Alphonsus Liguori says the angelical salutation is most pleasing to the Blessed Virgin, as if the joy she experienced when St. Gabriel announced she was to be the Mother of God were renewed. Thomas Kempis notes that she indeed hears this sound with pleasure. St. Bonaventure says Mary’s salutation corresponds to the wants of him who salutes her. October is the month of the Holy Rosary, revealed to St. Dominic to convert the Albigensian heretics. The devotion was embraced by all Catholics, approved by the Church, and enriched with indulgences. The Rosary should be said slowly, devoutly, kneeling, and preferably with others. Even if one must fight distractions, perseverance ensures spiritual profit, for “he who is faithful in little things will also be faithful in those that are greater” (Luke 16:10).

Brother Matthew continues with true devotion to the Blessed Virgin, which he calls a perfect renewal of the vows or promises of holy baptism. By this devotion, Christians renounce the devil, the world, sin, and self, and give themselves entirely to Jesus Christ by the hands of Mary, consecrating the value of all their actions. The councils and the devotion to Mary help Christians remember and renew the vows and promises of baptism. Join us as we embrace this devotion, renew our baptismal vows, and give all our actions to the Blessed Virgin for the glory of Jesus Christ.
