“Let him who has ears Hear.” Matthew 13:19

The Truth About Ourselves

This week on From the Housetops, Brother Matthew presents a reflection inspired by the Confessions of Saint Augustine, highlighting the importance of knowing the truth about ourselves. God has placed in every soul a love for truth, yet this is opposed by self-love, which resists anything that exposes our faults. When truth challenges us, we tend to reject it, even though it alone can correct and guide us. This inner conflict gives rise to the struggles of conscience, as truth continues to call us to conversion while self-love seeks to silence it. Since truth is God Himself, we must seek His light through prayer, Scripture, and sincere counsel, asking for the humility and courage to recognize and overcome our faults.

Brother Matthew also draws from Keeping the Faith by Paul Lavin to reflect on the nature of anger. While anger can be a natural response to injustice, it becomes sinful when it turns into uncontrolled wrath and a desire for revenge. In a world that often glorifies violence and vengeance, we are reminded that true happiness comes from following God’s law, even when it is difficult. With the grace God provides, we can overcome disordered passions and respond with reason and virtue. Listen to this episode of From the Housetops and deepen your understanding of truth, self-knowledge, and the path to authentic Catholic living.
