“Let him who has ears Hear.” Matthew 13:19
The Truth Proclaimed: Mary Is the Mother of God
This week on From the Housetops, Brother Matthew reflects on the traditional observance of the Divine Maternity, celebrated on October 11, honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary as Mother of God. Drawing from a sermon by Pope St. Leo the Great, he explains the mystery of the Incarnation: how the Son of God became man to free humanity from eternal death, born of the Virgin Mary through the power of the Holy Spirit while preserving her virginity. This emphasizes the divine and human nature of Jesus Christ and the extraordinary circumstances of His birth.
Brother Matthew then turns to the writings of St. Bernard of Clairvaux, who reflects on the humility of Christ, who subjected Himself to Mary, and the sublime dignity of the Mother of God. He highlights the unique union of Mary’s virginity, humility, and fruitfulness, encouraging everyone to imitate her humility. The episode concludes by recalling the 1931 jubilee marking the fifteenth centenary of the Council of Ephesus, where the Church formally condemned the errors of Nestorius and affirmed the Catholic doctrine that Mary is truly the Mother of God. Listen to this reflection on the Divine Maternity, the mystery of the Incarnation, and the humility and dignity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
